While dental emergencies are rare, they can happen, and it’s essential to know how to take care of your teeth no matter what. When your dental health is at risk, we will ensure that you’re treated as soon as possible. We are here to help you.

What to Do in the Event of a Dental Emergency

At Clark Dental Group, we understand that dental emergencies are always unexpected and frightening. Knowing what to do in an emergency is essential, whether it’s a knocked-out tooth, a broken crown, or severe pain. Let us help you navigate the steps for getting back on track in an emergency.

Know Your Options

When it comes to dental emergencies, there are two main options: seeking professional treatment from your dentist or finding over-the-counter treatments for temporary relief. If you choose the latter, be sure you are doing so under the guidance of your dentist because not all over-the-counter products are safe for use.

For instance, many people assume that taking ibuprofen is enough to resolve their dental issues; however, ibuprofen is only effective if combined with other treatments. Also, remember not to apply heat directly to any affected area, as this can cause further damage. In addition, if you have a broken tooth or crown, try your best not to touch it and keep it moist until you can visit your dentist.

Here are some tips that can help you find relief until you can get the professional help you need:
  • Broken or cracked tooth/teeth: This emergency requires professional care. You should call us immediately if it is a broken tooth with pain, sensitivity, or bleeding. You may need emergency dental work, such as placing a temporary crown.
  • Broken jaw: Seek emergency care immediately if you have a fractured jaw. With broken bones, it is best to err on the side of caution and call 911 before calling a dentist.
  • Permanent tooth knocked out: You must see us as soon as possible if a permanent tooth gets knocked out. We may be able to save the tooth, but the sooner you are seen, the better your chances of saving the tooth. You can try to place the tooth back into the socket, but don’t force it, and don’t touch it by the root. If it doesn’t go back in, place it in a cup of milk to keep it moist and bring it to the dentist’s office.
  • Object caught between teeth: Flossing or using a water pick can help to remove the object and relieve pain. Call us if the thing is too deep, and we can gently remove it.
  • Severe toothache: Please get in touch with us if you have a severe and persistent toothache. We will help you determine the cause and develop a treatment plan if necessary.

I am so thankful for Dr. Shelly and Dr. Brian Clark! Dr. Brian is really knowledgeable, really effective and efficient. The office is fantastic as well! When we had a dental emergency, five other dentists would not see us until a week later, but Dr. Brian‘s office got us in the very same day. And they work really well with our insurance. Dr. Shelly has been my kids’ pediatrician dentist for 17 years and I absolutely love her! She puts even my nervous kids at ease and I trust her completely.
